Service

 

As a member of NHS, you are obligated to complete 30 hours of community service during the first semester and 20 hours during the second semester. As an organization, we contribute approximately 9,000 hours of service to our community every year. You get to be a part of something truly remarkable—so take initiative and make the best of this opportunity. Please read on for guidelines, important dates, and service opportunities.

Use the chart below to help yourself decide if projects or opportunities you participate in can count for NHS hours. If your project can't count, we're sorry, but you should definitely continue doing what you do! For projects that DO count for sure, see the list below! To submit hours, click on the "Service Hour Form" tab under "Service" above!

Shawnee Community Services

Happy Bottoms

Down Syndrome Guild

Description: working with kids with down syndrome- help set up and clean up before and after activities- during the activities keep the kids on task and out of trouble

 

The Call KC

An organization dedicated to helping people find service opportunities

Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City

An organization, targeted towards younger generations, dedicated to helping people find service opportunities

  • The Youth Volunteer Corps is a national organization that was founded in KC. They have a myriad of service opportunities, from tutoring in a Shawnee Mission elementary school to weeding a community garden. Opportunities are conveniently scheduled for after school and weekend hours.

Provides lodging for the families of children who are patients at Children’s Mercy Hospital

Provides food for the local needy

Agency which protects and aids physically and sexually abused children

 

SMNW Service Clubs

 

Want to help the world AND get more involved in your school community?  Looking for a neat way to meet new people? Check out some organizations right at SMNW that have plenty of service opportunities avalable.

 

CCC (Cougar Community Committment)
  • Students complete a variety of service projects during and outside the class, which is taught by Mrs. Jan Berg. Talk to your conselor if you are interested in enrolling in CCC.

Interact Club
  • Interact is a youth organization founded by Rotary International. All students are welcome, and there are no fees. Members complete a wide variety of service projects all over the city. Interact Club meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:10 in room 202. There is an additional meeting make-up meeting after school in room 202.

Last Cookie Baking of the Year!

Date: May 5th

Time: 10-2

Location: Room 229

Description: You will bake cookies and bring one of the following ingredients: Margarine/Butter(in stick form), Sugar, Sandwich baggies, Flour

 

Parents Night Out

Date: May 6, orientation at 5 then actual PNO is 5:30-8:30

Description: You will help children with special needs and their siblings while their parents get a night off. They have trouble getting volunteers in May so they need lots of help. Even though this won’t count for service it’s an important way to help our community.

 

Scraps KC

Date: May 6, 2-5 pm

Description: You’ll be helping shoppers create art. At least 4 volunteers are needed.
