Welcome to the official webpage of the Shawnee Mission Northwest National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is exactly what it sounds like—an honors organization comprised of high-achieving students. Members are selected based on the four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Every year, the SMNW chapter of the National Honor Society contributes approximately 9,000 hours of service to the community. National Honor Society is the only extracurricular activity noted on students' transcripts and diplomas upon graduation.

If you are an applicant or a member and cannot find the information you are looking for, feel free to contact one of the executive board members or our sponsor, Dr. Boren.

Have photos from your volunteer hours? Show how you improved the world by sending photos to an executive board member or Dr. Boren via text or email.

Next meeting: Wednesday December 6

at 2:45PM

in the NW Auditorium

See you there!

4 Pillars of NHS

National Honor Society is founded on the 4 pillars of Leadership, Character, Scholarship, and Service.

Leadership

  • Holding leadership roles helps to develop ourselves as people and to help the community

  • Leading by example: setting high standards for the organizations our members lead and showing everyone in the organizations that making the right choices is a good choice

  • Leading is not only heading an organization, but making every member in it feel important

Character

  • When our friends make the wrong decisions, we hold high standards for ourselves

  • Doing what's right when no one is watching

  • Having the best interests of others at heart

  • Honesty and integrity

Scholarship

  • Academics are important to making a well-rounded student

  • A passion to learn and grow in knowledge

  • A desire to help our peers grow in knowledge as well

  • Persistence and hard work to push ourselves to succeed at school

Service

  • Giving back to the community

  • A desire to help others for the sake of helping others

  • When you help improve someone else's life, your life improves too!

  • Service projects are fun and rewarding

  • Group service allows for bonding among NHS members and others

Members work to maintain all of these pillars in our daily lives in order to be the best people we can be!
